About Salesians

This Institution is run by the Salesians of Don Bosco. Don Bosco Beatitudes takes its name from Saint John Bosco, a humble priest of northern Italy who dedicated his entire life to the welfare of poor youth. The Salesian Society is named after Saint Francis de Sales who is the model of kindness, love and patience. Today the Salesians work in over 102 countries and the society ranks third in the size of all religious orders and second as a Foreign Missionary Society.

Rev.Fr.Orpheus Mantovani, a Salesian priest from Italy had the spirit, zeal and the dreams helping the poorest of the poor. His dreams came true when the Archbishop Louis Mathias of Madras-Mylapore asked Fr.Mantovani, who was the parish priest of Tambaram to survey Vyasarpadi for a new parish. After studying the place, on 8th December 1964, the feast of the Immaculate Conception, he purchased the land that was a dumping ground for cinders. He was moved by the poverty of the people and the pitiful condition of the lepers. He converted this land into a living space. The place was overcrowded with the evacuated slum and pavement dwellers from the city and with 20,000 Indians repatriated from Burma. The work was officially inaugurated on 2nd February 1965. Eventually the leprosy patients were shifted to Pope John's Garden which is 8 kilo meters away from the centre. We the Salesian fathers, brothers and sisters at Don Bosco Beatitudes, with the collaboration of other women religious are proud to carry on the wonderful heritage given to us by our founder and father, Don Bosco.

The Beatitudes has a number of welfare projects for the Leprosy patients, their children, the elderly, handicapped persons and poor slum dwellers. Ever since its inception in 1965 it has catered to several thousands of needy people. It is situated in North Madras which is infested with slums. Most of the poor people of the city of Madras live in this area. The welfare programmes in the centre aim to improve the lives of the poor people. Our programmes include all age groups, from the cradle to the grave. Help is given to every one irrespective of caste, creed or religion.

This centre is sustained solely by the contributions of generous people from all over the world. FBC – Friends Beatitudes Chennai
